What Does a Digital Marketing Agency Actually Do?
Digital Marketing · 8 May 2026 · 5 min read
Ask ten business owners what an agency does and you will get ten answers, most of them involving social media posts. The actual job is broader and less visible.
Research and strategy
Before anything is built, the work is understanding what customers search for, how competitors are positioned, what the business can honestly claim, and which channels are worth funding. This stage determines whether the rest of the money is well spent.
Technical work
Site speed, mobile behaviour, crawlability, structured data, tracking, forms, call routing. Unglamorous, and the reason many campaigns underperform when it is skipped.
Content and creative
Pages, articles, ad copy, social creative, video, photography direction. The purpose is not volume — it is answering the questions a buyer has at each stage.
Campaign execution
Building and managing search and social campaigns, adjusting bids and budgets, testing creative, cutting what is not converting. Ongoing, not set-and-forget.
Measurement and reporting
- Setting up analytics and conversion tracking correctly
- Attributing enquiries to channels
- Reporting on leads and cost per lead, not just traffic
- Recommending what to change next month
What a good agency should not do
Promise rankings it cannot control, report on impressions when you asked about enquiries, or hold your accounts. If you are evaluating options, our guide on choosing a digital marketing company covers the questions worth asking.
